A Centenary Celebration of the First Female Fellows of the London Geological Society

  • 28 February 2019

A Centenary Celebration of the First Female Fellows of the London Geological Society is a one-day conference to be held at The Geological Society, Burlington House, Piccadilly, London on 21st May 2019 on the theme of pioneering women geologists.

Geoscientist Cover Competition

The Geoscientist Magazine, the monthly membership magazine of The Geological Society, are running their first ever cover competition in celebration of 100 years of female fellows of the Geological Society.

They are inviting submissions for the cover of the May 2019 edition of the magazine inspired by a celebration of women in geology, past or present. It’s up to you how you interpret the theme. You could send us a drawing of your favourite female geologist, a photograph of yourself or your colleagues in the lab or in the field, an artwork which you feel represents the importance of diversity in the geosciences – anything you like!

Your entry can take any format – a photograph, painting, drawing or other artwork – and you can send us a digital scan or post us the physical copy. Entries must be in portrait dimensions, and if sent digitally, of print quality.

Entry is free and open to all. Submit as many entries as you like, individually or jointly – all entries must reach education@geolsoc.org.uk by midnight on Sunday 17th March.

Further information about how to enter and the terms and conditions of the competition can be found here.

Call for Expressions of Interest and Abstracts - now closed.

The conference welcomes proposals for research papers or poster presentations on the historical contribution of women in geology. It is hoped that the presentations will build on and expand the work achieved at an exploratory conference in 2005 “The Role of Women in the History of Geology”.

Any aspects on this subject are acceptable and talks should be up to 30 mins. We welcome abstracts (200 words) until 31st January 2019. Please send expressions of interest, abstracts and enquiries to Professor Cynthia Burek or further information from the conveners.

It is intended to hold a celebration conference dinner and to publish the proceedings.

Conveners: Prof. Cynthia Burek c.burek@chester.ac.uk, Dr. Bettie Higgs b.higgs@ucc.ie and Dr. John Cubitt jmcubitt@gmail.com.
Organised by the History of Geology Group (HOGG).
