Cavan & Monaghan Science Festival WITS talk

  • 26 November 2018

WITS spoke to 60 5th Year students about Women in STEM in St Louis Secondary School Carrickmacross on Wednesday 21 November 2018 as part of Cavan & Monaghan Science Festival.

Marion Palmer spoke about why women are essential to STEM and the importance of making an informed choice when leaving school. We are all STEM users, consumers and patients but we can be designers, innovators, creators and problem-solvers as well. Curiosity is the key, asking why, helps us explore the world and shape it.

The focus on STEM was explained in terms of the range of well-paying jobs and career opportunities for STEM here in Ireland. The girls were reminded that STEM is part of our everyday life, a wonder and a joy. The importance of women in STEM and why they are needed. was stressed. The girls were advised to develop their confidence and competence and to keep an open minds as they explored their options after school.

Thanks to Claire Hughes of the Cavan & Monaghan Science Festival for the invitation to WITS, thanks to the 5th Year girls of St Louis Carrickmacross and their Guidance Counsellor Ms C Harrington for their kind welcome and attention.

Congratulations to all at the Cavan & Monaghan Science Festival.
