Celebrating the women of UCC IWD2019

  • 31 March 2019

UCC celebrated International Women's Day 2019 with a celebration of the inspiring women of UCC. The campaign features portraits by Cork-based photographer Clare Keogh, accompanied by quotes from 11 women on why they admire the women they have turned the spotlight on. Read about the campaign here.

Magaly V Mora of PIXAPP and WITS writes:

Celebrating inspiring women of UCC was a campaign rolled out on the @universitycollegecork Instagram account in celebration of International Women Day of 2019. I was nominated by Dr Fatima Gunning. Dr Gunning is a Senior Staff Researcher and Head of Graduate Studies at Tyndall National Institute. She is Senior Research Fellow at the Physics Department in UCC.

Dr. Fatima Gunning nominated me for my efforts to encourage young people to study engineering, and in particular raise awareness and implement actions towards gender diversity since my college days. And the original quote from Dr Fatima Gunning (@PhotonGunning) was: "Magaly’s passion for Engineering is contagious and inspirational; her experience shows a lot of determination and hard work to succeed in a field that lacks gender diversity worldwide."

It was a real honour to be nominated by a woman who has been successfully working for so long in Science and Research, and who also takes time and effort to support other women. Dr Gunning is an enthusiastic role model for her PhD students and her colleagues in UCC. I had personally witnessed how she encourages and supports her PhD students to reach their full potential. I sincerely appreciate her nomination, it means a lot to me coming from a working mother, a very dedicated senior researcher in Tyndall and a person who works in many efforts promoting diversity and equal opportunities in STEM.
