Gender Equality Index 2019: Still far from the finish line

The Gender Equality Index is a tool to measure the progress of gender equality in the EU, developed by EIGE. It gives more visibility to areas that need improvement and ultimately supports policy makers to design more effective gender equality measures.

The EU has a score of 67.4 out of 100, leaving room for improvement. Progress continues at a snail’s pace, with the score increasing only one point since the 2017 edition.

Ireland’s score is 71.3 up from 69.5 in 2017. You can read about Ireland’s work-life balance here under these thematic headings:

  • Parental leave
  • Informal caring for older persons and persons with disabilities and long-term care services
  • Informal caring for children and childcare services
  • Transport and public infrastructure
  • Flexible working arrangements
  • Lifelong learning.

This is the fifth Gender Equality Index, it was previously published in 2005, 2013, 2015 and 2017.

The Gender Equality Index is part of the work of EIGE European Institute for Gender Equality. It has an Experts Forum and Ireland’s member is awaiting appointment.
