National Women's Council of Ireland #FemFest 2019

The National Women’s Council of Ireland held #FemFest, a major conference for young women aged 16-25 on Saturday 19 January 2019. The conference discusssed leadership, equality and planning for that feminist future! On the centenary of the first Dáil, FemFest 2019 explored the theme of women in public life in Ireland: past, present and future.

Ella Keogh WITS student member attended and she writes:

I attended NWCI's FemFest with my sister this January and I had a fantastic day! It was amazing to see such a large group of young women all gathered together to support each other. Vicky Phelan's keynote speech was phenomenal - she spoke about cervical cancer and her life in such an honest and inspiring way. Sometimes it feels like topics such as personal health, sex and relationships are taboo, especially in Ireland, but Vicky really reminded me that it's so important to talk about these things and share our own experiences. Other notable speakers were Ellie Kisyombe - a refugee woman running for council in Dublin and Martina Fitzgerald - author and political journalist. I left the day feeling really inspired by all of the events, and supported as a young woman in Ireland.

Thanks Ella and congratulations to NWCI for the conference. WITS looks forward to #FemFest2020.
