Saritha Unnikrishnan IT Sligo and WITS member writes about the STEM Team @ IT Sligo:

We have a number of active female and male academic staff who perform STEM activities at local schools to encourage more females to choose STEM subjects.

In collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering IT Sligo and local industries, we have been conducting Women in Engineering coffee mornings associated with Engineer’s Week for the last two years.

As a result of this, a focus group of eight members have been formed in March 2018. Our aim is to promote the awareness about engineering as a career equally suitable for females and males.

We are currently planning for Engineering Fair on 3rd March 2019 at IT Sigo as part of Engineer’s Week. The team has recently secured an SFI discover funding for conducting the event. The event will be focused on enlightening youngsters and their families about the opportunities and impact of engineering in the society.

One of our active members is Dr. Marion McAfee. Marion is a lecturer in mechatronic engineering at IT Sligo and a researcher at the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) funded advanced manufacturing research centre, I-Form. Read about her work here.
