UCD BioSoc x Enactus UCD: STEM Summer Accelerator 2020

The UCD Biological Society hosted a STEM Summer Accelerator, an entrepreneurial and STEM event in collaboration with Enactus UCD. The Accelerator was hosted from July 20th – August 21st. UCD Students had the opportunity to work together in creating social impacts on the community. This involved coming up with solutions within the field of science and technology that would benefit the community around us. At the end of the Accelerator, a panel of judges (which consisted of faculty advisors and board members from Enactus and the Biological Society) chose one project that will receive funding and continue to run under the respective project leaders, UCD Biological Society and Enactus UCD. We hope that through this event we can inspire a new generation of female scientists into biology research and we believe this furthered University College Dublin's Athena Swan goals.

We expected a large turnout for this event, and we were delighted to see dozens of students signed up! During the five week period, students who had signed up were put into teams of five, with one Mentor guiding their designated team. All teams were very passionate and committed in finding solutions for the problems that affect our planet currently, and all teams had brilliant ideas for their start-ups.

We are proud to announce the winner of the STEM Summer Accelerator, Shop Glas. Shop Glas would function similar to Amazon, as a one-stop online marketplace, creating a quick and efficient shopping experience for customers. The difference would be that every product listed would contribute positively to the Irish economy, support small independent businesses that may be suffering due to the crisis and help fight against unethical production.

The Biological Society strives to promote student interest in the biological sciences, raise awareness for conservation and ethical issues and provide career information for aspiring biologists. Enactus UCD is a community of student, academic and business leaders committed to using the power of entrepreneurial action to enable human progress. Together, we believe that we can inspire and motivate aspiring female scientists all around the world to take part in STEM events and further their interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Thanks to Fatima Butt, Auditor, 20/21, UCD Biological Society for the post. WITS was delighted to support the event. The funds will go towards the winning team’s expenses in their STEM startup!
